Adam Kimmel x Carhartt Hay Shirt

I'm a big fan of the work shirt. I know it goes at least as far back as the old west and would even go as far as calling it the new white-tee because of how ubiquitous it has become in menswear over the last few years. It's one of the most versatile shirts you can own and even though considered a casual staple can also be smartened up by simply tucking it in an adding a tie. I own a few from a couple of different brands that I rotate depending on the occasion.

I mentioned in an earlier post about my appreciation for designer Adam Kimmel and ever since word got out of his collaboration with Carhartt I've been anxious to see his take of this wardrobe staple. The shirt above is part of that collection and is a fine example of reinterpreting a classic for today. A tailored silhouette and a nice shade of blue keeps this version out of Dad's shirt territory. Barney's got this one on pre-order for spring but I'll probably be waiting till the spring sale before I try to snag one.

New Sound

Moon Safari, the 1998 album I had on repeat for a year straight was my intro to french band Air's beautiful musical landscapes. I would eventually own every single release and see them perform several times over the years. They have since gained much commercial success while still retaining some of their indie charm by working with obscure artists like Italian writer Alessandro Baricco(City Reading:Tre Storie Western) and producing soundtracks for film by Sophia Coppola(Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation).

Their latest effort Le Voyage Dans La Lune merges both film and new musical explorations by the band. Director George Méliès very early (1902) and strange sci-fi film Voyage Dans La Lune ( A trip to the Moon) was apparently rediscovered and premiered at last year's Cannes festival. Air was brought on to score it and followed with a subsequent production of a full length album inspired by the film. Air purists might protest them straying away from their early french pop, electro style but I think the bands inventiveness and unique sound while keeping it retro remain intact.

2012 has been a little hectic so far so it was nice to get a little bit of retail relief in the form of this care package from the folks at Unionmade. I'm probably the last dude to get a copy of Inventory's fall issue #5 and have been quite anxious to get it. I have also been wanting to finally try some of Australia's luxury grooming products from Aesop and let me tell you, I'm very pleased. The stuff is quality and smells so good It might be over for the Rite Aid stuff.

Delfonics is a Japanese stationary company that I've been reading about from various online sources so I thought I'd pick up one of their wooden ball point pens with the hope I'd start writing more this year. Unionmade sure know what guys like and provided me with some nice things to start the new year with. Thanks!

I picked up this bottle a year or so ago on a whim after dropping into a local Hermes boutique. This "cleansing milk" was made to treat saddle leathers and is a conditioner of sorts. I don't really own any Hermes leather goods so I've mainly used it on my belts, wallets and a splash on my leather shoes to lift dirt and give them a little nourishment. Obviously, I didn't need to buy this but It's fun to add a little bit of luxury into your everyday living and activity. Why not!?

I think his clothing is inventive, modern and firmly rooted in the American menswear tradition. In this great video he offers a retrospective of his past collections, collaborations and inspirations. I was impressed and couldn't believe it when I heard and read his SS/11 collection was inspired by Snoop Dogg!

Well, yesterday actually. The day went by so fast I didn't get a chance to post. Comfort is the mode. The holiday events are underway and I've been doing a lot of running around so haven't had much use for outerwear just yet. Plus, it's still pretending to be early fall around here anyway. I did wear socks but I'm finding it increasingly difficult to choose the pair most appropriate. This might be the first Xmas I'll be welcoming socks as stocking stuffers.

I've been a Roots fan since Organix and have always thought they were one of music's most prolific bands. I haven't heard the album in its entirety but plan on streaming it on NPR before picking it up next week. I feel like they have attempted to make the "Concept" album on previous recordings but have never quite had the freedom they do now in the bands career. I'm so grateful that they have lasted through the ups and downs of the music industry and have continued to make amazing music.

Cabrales Slip On Shoe

Or "Slippers" as they are formerly known should be included on every gents list of essential items for the holiday season. This indispensable shoe in my eyes symbolizes domestic living like no other. Unfortunately, it's taken a back seat over the years to the other, less attractive cousin, the Flip Flop. Best for daily jaunts to the trash, mail box and retrieval of that miss-thrown newspaper in the bushes. These above are from the brand Industry of All Nations and are a sharp and sophisticated option for kicking around the house or on the porch with a hot cup and your favorite newspaper or magazine. Hope everyone has an opportunity to relax and enjoy family, friends and good food this Thanksgiving.

I've been on the hunt for a casual outerwear piece for a little while. I came across this coat/blazer/jacket while out thrifting and was instantly struck. I actually had to come back on another day to get it because I had to wrap my head around the multi-functionality of it. It zips and/or buttons, rugged yet fits like a slim-fitting sports coat, and keeps me warm without breaking a sweat in this often unpredictable west coast weather. It might be the perfect coat although I kinda wish it was in navy. It goes well with most of what I've been wearing this season though.

The other thing that surprised me was that it was made by a very popular high end designer which I think I'll just keep a secret because it wasn't what first caught my attention. I think there is something to that because I wish more brands got attention because of the design, quality, and function of their garments than just the name on the label.

I do need to find a scarf (not too thick) that might go with it so if anybody has a link or color suggestion hit me up.

I picked this one up towards the end of summer (I assume it was an SS11 piece) on sale with the full intention of adding it to my fall wardrobe. It has been in steady rotation since and very useful as the west coast chill has finally started to set in. Knitwear is something Mr. Lauren and crew seem to always do well and adding these brass clips is what makes them the best in the game.

Well, mostly on casual days and weekends anyway. I've begun to narrow down my wardrobe to the essential pieces that define my style and approach to fashion. It's not much to look at but it's me and feel like understated and refined is really my aesthetic. I've definitely experimented with many a trend over the last year and a half(Workwear, Anglo-italian, fashion forward, japanese street-style) but think classic American with a lean towards prep is probably my preferred style. Actually the biggest thing I've embraced is fit and have even enjoyed a more slender, european approach to it.

The style could be described as euro-prep if there is such a thing. It probably is more of a french approach to prep than anything but I have not gone full strangle hold with it. Quality is also my new conviction as well. No more cheap clothes is my new mantra. I'm not saying buy expensive but if it's something I plan on wearing for the next 5 years it better be the best my money can buy and not just the most popular brands. Tried and tested brands with a good if not great manufacturing tradition is where my money is going from now on. I'm Just saying.

That's right folks, the earth has spun around once again and I've been given the blessing of another year of living dangerously. To celebrate, I became the proud owner of this beauty and needless to say I'm in love. It's actually vintage if you can believe it and at the price I got it you would have thought I beat up some poor gent and took it from him. A steal is a very big understatement.

I'd like to give a special shout out to this dope photo app I recently downloaded on my android phone. Expect to be seeing pic's of this guy in future posts. Things enjoyed? Most definitely.

Drive (The Soundtrack)

I like many have been eagerly awaiting the release of this movie which I believe will cement Mr. Gosling as a movie icon of this generation. As a film soundtrack junky I've been disappointed over the years with the lackluster effort of most film soundtracks. I miss the heyday of the movie soundtrack during the 80s when either the film score (Vangelis, Moroder) or compilation of popular songs carried the film as much as the story-line did.

I've spent some time streaming this online and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the score composed by Cliff Martinez (formerly of red hot chili peppers) and selection of stand alone tracks. I think this will only intensify the buzz surrounding the story, directing and I'm sure, great performances of this upcoming film.

These are a pair of my vintage Rossi Australian work boots. They are synonymous with outdoor rugged goodness and the outback. Now, when most people think of boots from Australia they might be picturing some monstrosity such as these but I plead with you to consider these as more suitable option. Some more options below:

I say this because I've already seen it sneaked into a couple of F/W menswear collections and I really think we will see it in more as an alternative to rugged staple, the Red Wing. Anybody want to call B.S on that? Thoughts?

I'm always excited when I hear about new brands coming out of France. With all the attention currently on Italian or Anglo-italian menswear its good to see that the French still have it. I was first alerted to parisian brand Ami through menswear site dieworkwear and was instantly taken by the look and styling of the brand. As a fan of A.p.c and Kitsune I think Ami continues what the french do best which is chic, sophisticated, causal wear but with a bit of luxury.

I had a pretty good time checking out all that the new breed(and old) of menswear, footwear and accessory brands will have to offer us in the coming seasons. I met some pretty cool and some cranky people who did their best to highlight the finer points of their wares in the splendor of casino lights and Nevada heat (114F). Why they have it in Vegas out of all the places in the western part of the U.S I'll never know. I did get a chance to partake in some Vegas fun though and even caught up on some R&R. Now back to work.

As somewhat of an anglophile I do like to keep abreast on things british, style-wise, with Lineage of Influence being one of my favorite online stops. I'm not sure what it is but they always seem to keep it fresh while staying true to their menswear tradition. I do want to take the opportunity to wish the people of London well and a speedy recovery.

I'm not sure why I hadn't heard of U.K blog Style & Error or Tom Stubbs earlier as he seems to be a leading figure in menswear over there but I'm glad I did. His blog, especially these Stance video's are pretty cool. It's great to see people in the street rockin' there looks and showcasing their individual style. Someone in the U.S needs to do a version of this (GiltMANual?) You may not be familiar with all these guys but one thing they have in common, Mr. Stubbs included is great style. The watch game of these gents is also very on point. Enjoy!

I'm sure by now people who have stopped by this blog know I like obscure films. There is nothing more fun than coming across an odd, ambitious film that didn't quite catch on or is more a cult favorite than a blockbuster. I stumbled upon this film through a vintage John Barry soundtrack Lp at my local record shop. The cover really intrigued me as well as the film listing Gregory Peck (you know, Mockingbird) as the producer.

The 1974 film is based on the true story of teenager Robin Lee Graham's attempt to sail around the world on his boat Dove in 1965. Robin also meets his future wife while on his journey which makes for quite a harrowing and romantic adventure if you ask me. I haven't seen it yet but I got my local video store transferring a rare VHS copy to dvd for me. It should be a nice lazy summer day movie to enjoy.

The story begins in 1998 as budding hip-hop producer Adrian Younge finds himself confined by the limitations of the MPC. He begins teaching himself how to play various instruments so he can fully realize his vision. First it was keyboards, then drums, sax, guitar, and bass. Fascinated with the sounds of Italian soundtracks by the likes of Ennio Morricone, Younge begins work on the soundtrack to the fictional film Venice Dawn, recording the album intermittently over the course of the next year. What developed was a sound equal parts Morricone and Air. Self-released, the entire album was composed, arranged, and played by Younge. Only a thousand CDs were pressed, replete with faux soundtrack album art designed by Younge himself. Sold mostly in the L.A. area, the CD became collectable among those in the know.

Fast forward to 2008, and Younge finds himself at the center of the Black Dynamite zeitgeist. Instrumental in the film’s development, Younge not only edited the film, but composed the original score as well. Hailed as a modern blaxploitation masterpiece, the Black Dynamite score solidified Younge’s position as a force to be reckoned with on the new worldwide soul and funk scene.

Taking some time off after the success of Black Dynamite, Younge began revisiting some of his earlier work from Venice Dawn and envisioned a new sound that would take the blaxploitation of Black Dynamite and mesh it with the more left-field sounds of Venice Dawn, eventually deciding to bring everything full circle by releasing the material under the Venice Dawn moniker. This new LP, titled Something About April, will be released this fall on Wax Poetics Records, with the first single, “It’s Me,” coming in August.

In correlation with the release of the new LP, Wax Poetics Records is reissuing a digital-only EP version of the original Venice Dawn album for free. Its rerelease eleven years later connects the dots between Black Dynamite, Younge’s early work, and his newest album Something About April.

A couple of books I picked up from my local used bookstore for those lazy summer days I get to do some quality reading. Gordon Parks Half Past Autumn is a photo-biography of the late great photographer, filmmaker, and author. A Gentleman's Wardobe by Paul Keer is a classic but dated (1987) compendium of classic menswear for gentlemen wanting to step up their style game.

I've been thinking a lot lately about the idea of everyday items. The things that you really can't leave the house without and rely on heavily in your day to day activities. I've pretty much, with exception to my mobile device, have determined that these are it for me. I'm not referencing the brand of the items as much as what each item represents to me and my daily life.

Sunglasses-Ray-Ban Aviators. I drive A LOT and pretty much can't get on the road without them.

Pen-Zebra F-701. Even with the reliance on mobile devices for communication you really can't do much without a reliable pen around. This is mine.

Watch-Vintage 60s Citizen Manual. I've got many watches but none that I really consider strictly an everyday. I'd been eyeing this one on eBay for a long time and finally decided to pull the trigger. I imagine it belonged to someone who really needed a simple, reliable, everyday watch during a not so simple time in history.

In 1981, Marvin Gaye, the all time champion of soul music, took refuge in Ostend, a little town located on the Belgian coast. Marvin’s choice to lay anchor in Ostend was totally unexpected, not to say incredible. On the fact of it, there was no reason for this charismatic character to come and live in the home town of famous Belgian impressionistic painter James Ensor.

Marvin nevertheless remained in Ostend for nearly two years. He went back to the States to receive a Grammy Award for his latest album “Sexual Healing”. He died in Los Angeles on 1 April 1984, shot dead at home by his own father, a clergyman.

"Twenty years after the making of a first 29 minute film entitled,Marvin Gaye Transit Ostend, I decided to make this second documentary film. It’s my way of bringing to life the picture Marvin Gaye dedicated to me."

I'm over my eyewear budget this year but it hasn't stopped me from wanting another pair. I'm pretty convinced my next pair will be a retro inspired pair of plastic framed aviators. There is something very suave and luxe about the style to me but also fun and nonchalant. I did find a pair of YSL's at discount awhile back but someone else had the same idea and snatched them up before I had a chance to get them. The hunt begins...

The Accessory

Had a great Memorial Day weekend and finally got a chance to rest and connect with friends and family. I also decided it was time to start accessorizing for the summer. I'm not a flashy guy but I do think that adding a little wrist candy whether it be a leather bracelet or some silver goes a long way in expressing individual style. I wouldn't mine investing in something a little more high-end that can become my signature piece for a few years.

I must admit that I too have been influenced by the injection of european and british style into modern American menswear these days. I've been subtly incorporating certain pieces and looks into my own personal wardrobe. I can't say I'm all double cuffs, breasts and wide knit ties yet but I can still appreciate quality fabric, tailoring, and attention to detail. I recently picked up this polo shirt on sale by Corneliani CC Collection and it hit all the right notes. I wasn't sure if I could pull off the cutaway collar but after slipping it on I was a little ashamed I hadn't tried it sooner. I guess you can call me pretty late to the party. This beauty will definitely be in rotation this summer.

I've always been inspired by vintage photography because of the way it captures that certain vibe of a time and place. I stumbled upon Anthony Catalano's flickr stream and was completely blown away. I think you could literally make a movie out of the photo's he has taken especially during his teen years growing up on the east coast in the 70's.

It has gotten really beautiful out here on the West Coast and I'm pretty happy about that. It's easier to get dressed this time of year because I don't have to be as methodical about what I'm wearing and I can pretty much throw stuff on and head out the door. This is what is keeping me cool and comfortable today with a little nod to the recent Royal nuptials that took place across the pond. Have a great weekend!

The first thing is that this looks eerily like my little brother which kinda freaked me out. A.P.C really did an amazing job this spring capturing my aesthetic. Casual and refined with a cool palette of blues, grays, whites and a nonchalance that they always do very well. I pretty much own all of these pieces from different brands except for the navy blazer which I'm considering picking up. The navy blazer is the one thing that keeps eluding me either because of price, quality, or fit. I got my eye on a couple on ebay but it's really been difficult to find one that meets all three in equal measure. Any suggestions? Send a link or two my way.

A little spin on Paul Newman's side hustle was appropriate for the title of this post as there is no American Icon that owned his style as much as this guy. The late actor, race car driver, humanitarian, and all around cool cat never wore a look on screen I didn't like but it's the off screen shot's I see of him frequently that really scream Icon. This pic especially sums up how brilliant he was at combining very basic pieces with that little extra something(chunky bracelet, stylish watch, fat cuffs). I will definitely be stealing this look. I came across a great overview of Newman's personal style over at the deservedly hyped Mr. Porter.

Giving Winter The Boot

I'm so glad that spring is upon us and couldn't wait to start transitioning my wardrobe to go with the beautiful weather we are starting to get on the West Coast. There really isn't a better feeling than slipping on a pair of comfy desert boots to get the season started right. I'm actually wearing ankle socks in these pic's because there has been a few wintery days still hanging on with an occasional shower or two. I'm not quite ready to go sock-less just yet.
